This paper is a look at the news department of an influential radio station from the Detroit market. However, the station was not licensed in Detroit or even its suburbs. Despite its funny call letters and studios and transmitter in another country, this station not only dominated the Detroit market, but found a loyal audience in several U.S. states. Twice an hour, the music stopped and a newscast aired. That news coverage is the focus of this paper. The writing and delivery of those newscasts had never been heard before. If today’s student of journalism were to write stories that emulated this station’s style, his/her instructor would likely want to have a long talk with that student.
