Program Submission Summary

Should We Blame the Messenger? When Severe Weather Strikes, Social Media Mixed Messaging Can Lead to Missed Messaging.

Sat, Apr 23, 1:30 to 2:30pm, LVCC West Hall, W221

Panel Submission Type: Panel/Research Presentation Session

Abstract

Climate change is producing more natural disasters. Broadcast journalists use social media to inform the public, but research and audience outrage show that some of these life-saving messages are lost or misinterpreted by the public. Our panel will use a case study of missed/mixed messaging during Hurricane Henri as well as research on severe weather messaging/ textual cues (to/from the National Weather Service and journalists) and best practices we can draw into class curriculum.
