Afro-Brazilian Women Creative Workers Speak: Juliana Vicente’s Standpoint Cinema

Sat, April 6, 11:00am to 12:45pm, Aztec Student Union, Union 1 – Pride Suite

Abstract

Juliana Vicente is an Afro-Brazilian woman filmmaker who founded and maintains her own production company in São Paulo. At Preta Porte films, Juliana and her team make films about Afro-Brazilian history and culture as well as other marginalized identities. In this paper I examine her Afronta! (Face It!) series for Netflix. This series features short testimonies by Afro-Brazilian women creative workers. I argue that this series constitutes a standpoint cinema in which marginalized groups can tell their stories.
