Abstract

O objetivo da comunicação é analisar a importância da experiência do exílio na trajetória intelectual de Roberto Schwarz. Particular atenção será conferida ao modo como o exílio francês, entre 1969 e 1977, impeliu Schwarz a fazer um balanço crítico - intelectual e político - da esquerda brasileira no presente e no passado. No contexto da chamada Guerra Fria cultural, o intelectual brasileiro não apenas estabeleceu os vínculos entre a ditadura militar (1964-1985) e o passado nacional, senão também demarcou uma tomada-de-posição distinta tanto da esquerda “comunista” quanto das demais concepções modernizadoras a respeito do processo de formação nacional.

Roberto Schwarz in exile
The aim of this paper is to analyze the importance of the experience of exile in Roberto Schwarz's intellectual career. Particular attention will be paid to the way in which exile in France, between 1969 and 1977, pushed Schwarz to take a critical - intellectual and political - look at the Brazilian left in the present and in the past. In the context of the so-called cultural Cold War, the Brazilian intellectual not only established the links between the military dictatorship (1964-1985) and the national past, but also demarcated a distinct position from both the "communist" left and other modernizing conceptions of the process of national formation.
