Abstract

In this paper, I discuss the possible contributions of learner corpus and first language learning research; my focus is the use of the connective "e" (and in English) in an early academic literacy programme (ProFIS). The data consists of texts from various genres obtained from PROCORP, a longitudinal corpus of academic texts written by learners of Portuguese during their first year of ProFIS, a higher education program at UNICAMP which receives students who graduated from secondary state schools in Campinas. Computational research tools, including a set of scripts written in the R language, were used for data cleaning and processing collocations as well as concordances. Learner corpora is the primary theoretical approach. Preliminary results indicate a polysemic and multifunctional use of "e", which appears to perform functions beyond adding non-contrasting ideas.
