Thu, April 4, 11:00am to 12:45pm, Aztec Student Union, Union 3 – Council Chambers

Abstract

Pondering the manifestation of real or imaginary facets of the ethos attributed to Minas Gerais, Brazil, this study examines that state’s arts and culture. With a focus on literary texts, music and other art forms, we will investigate values, cultural identities, and life styles. This research on mineiridade’s powers and paradoxes will discuss insight drawn from works by writers like Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Conceição Evaristo, Carolina Maria de Jesus, Adélia Prado and João Guimarães Rosa; sculptors like Antônio Francisco Lisboa (aka Aleijadinho); painters like Yara Tupinambá; dancers like O Corpo; and music stars like João Bosco, Milton Nascimento, Fernanda Takai, Skank and Uakti.
