Sat, April 6, 2:00 to 3:45pm, Aztec Student Union, Union 3 – Presidental Suite

Abstract

In attempting to explore the affirmative action policies in Brazil, I purpose a scoping review to examine, better understand the effects of The Statute of Racial Equality, and how it relates to Brazilian labor market. Scoping review of the literature has the objective to investigate the scope or coverage of the general idea which is still unclear present inside the literature (Arksey & O’Malley, 2005; Munn et al., 2018). This investigation can contribute to the anti-racist agenda in workplace cultures, anti-racist initiatives, and culturally responsive leadership approaches. Critical Diversity Scholars have been debating how HRD respond to matters of Social Justice, and how to prepare practitioners to confront racial inequity. (Sparkman, 2019; Bierema, 2020; Bohonos & Sisco, 2021; Byrd & Sparkman, 2022).
The main research question guiding this study is: How were the Labor Market and companies influenced by the affirmative action in their policies and practices in the Brazil? To start, I selected four databases related to HRD field and this examination included: full-text articles in the last ten years; peer reviewed in English language. The first set of analyses revealed that racial discussion in Brazil society after the implementation of affirmative action has increased considerably (Jaime; 2018). In related to the employment market and companies two aspects pointed out: (a) Improved skills of the Brazilian workforce and (b) Increased discussion about diversity management in Brazilian companies. This scoping review is a work in progress, more findings will be reported when the research is complete.
