Abstract

This paper delves into the intricate history and multifaceted impact of soybean production in Sorriso, Mato Grosso, Brazil, shedding light on its pivotal role in shaping regional, national, and international economic landscapes. Over the past four decades, Brazil's agricultural sector has witnessed a remarkable transformation, and Sorriso's local agricultural development emerges as a central narrative in this evolution. The convergence of abundant natural resources, technological innovations, and an entrepreneurial community has charted a unique developmental trajectory for Sorriso, catapulting it to prominence as a global leader in soybean production. This paper contends that studying soybean production's historical and contemporary influence on Sorriso bridges crucial historical, geographical, economic, and agricultural research gaps. Sorriso's trajectory from a modest rural town to a farming powerhouse is examined in detail. The region's strategic location, favorable climate, and rich soils were crucial in its rapid agricultural growth. The paper highlights the socioeconomic impact of this growth, attracting investment, diversifying the local economy, and generating employment opportunities. The influx of migrants seeking improved livelihoods contributed to rapid population growth and urbanization, transforming Sorriso into a vibrant, economically diverse center.
