Abstract

This session brings together study abroad professionals from the United States and Brazil to highlight innovative international learning experiences for U.S. students in Brazil. Building on the expertise of international education specialists and university faculty, this session will offer insights into how to develop study abroad experiences that are practical, accessible, and enriching for all students with a focus on improving global awareness and intercultural competency. The panel will begin with an overview of the current state of academic mobility between the United States and Brazil. Panelists will underscore the unique characteristics of each country that have created both challenges and opportunities for academic exchange between the two countries, while also providing an overview of the current state of the field of study abroad, particularly as it aims to redefine itself following the drastic changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Faculty will present a series of study abroad programs developed by US universities as case studies that highlight how short term study abroad programs provide an accessible and innovative mechanism for the expansion and strengthening of diverse forms of academic mobility between the two countries. Each presentation will offer insights into the key pedagogical and programmatic elements of how study abroad programs can maximize student learning and development and provide students with unique educational experiences that translate into a host of academic, personal, and professional benefits. Faculty will also share research that highlights how study abroad experiences contribute to students’ development of global awareness and intercultural competency.
