Session Submission Type: Complete Panel
In World Literature, Transnational Cinema, and Global Media: Towards a Transartistic Commons (2019), Robert Stam proposes a “trans methodology.” In this seminal theoretical investigation, Stam addresses contemporary thought and how it could be described as a flexible interpretive method based on “a series of ‘trans’ concepts that bring the advantage of implying movement and transition from one state to another.” This relational methodology encompasses a variety of approaches, and Stam includes a number of non-exclusionary examples such as: transnational, translingual, transhistorical, transdisciplinary, transtextual, transartistic, transcultural, transsectional, transmediatic, and of course transgender (within specific contexts). This panel proposes to explore the transformative possibilities espoused by this concept by looking at a variety of disciplines, media and contexts. Papers in question will address feminist transgressions, transcolletivities in cinema, queer embodiment in transmediatic film, and transhistorical approaches.
