Monitoring and Measuring Gender Equality in Education: USAID's Perspective and Programmatic Considerations

Wed, March 11, 9:45 to 11:15am, Washington Hilton, Floor: Concourse Level, Monroe

Abstract

USAID’s Education Strategy indicates that resources are to be invested that achieve measurable and sustainable educational outcomes. Gender integration is one of the critical priorities that has both reflected the US Government’s commitment to the MDGs and has undergirded its investments. This presentation will discuss illustrative lessons learned to date in designing, monitoring and measuring gender equality across USAID’s Education Strategy goals. Gender integration for Goal 1 (improving reading) will explore the indicators and measures related to gender-equitable teaching strategies, classroom management, and teaching and learning materials. A discussion of Goal 2 (youth workforce development) will review progress within USAID’s portfolio with respect to gender equitable skills development and livelihood outcomes. Gender integration for Goal 3 will illustrate the ways in which projects have assessed the impact of crisis and conflict on girls and boys from a gender perspective, with a particular focus on access and safe learning environments.

The presentation will close with a discussion of the ways in which these lessons are informing USAID’s approach to future monitoring and measurement of gender equality in education after 2015.
