Barriers to reading in Pakistan

Wed, March 11, 3:00 to 4:30pm, Washington Hilton, Floor: Concourse Level, Cabinet

Abstract

This presentation will describe the design, implementation and findings of a national study to explore barriers to the revitalization of a culture of reading in Pakistan. Historically, reading was a practice that was more strongly embraced by the educated population of Pakistan, but today the habit is practiced by a declining proportion of the population. This study was designed to identify the main contributors to this deterioration of the reading habit in Pakistan, touching on both access-related barriers and those stemming from attitudes and beliefs around the practice of reading.
