Related to the issue of pedagogy and practice is of course the issue of professional development—or what is often referred to as “teacher training.” How are teachers prepared for the task of teaching? How do good ideas—learned in pre-service and in-service programs—become good practice? Why has teacher preparation become central in education reform efforts and how it is presented? The discussants will reflect on the role that teacher education (pre and in-service) can play in improving pedagogy and hence learning (an issue that is overlooked by the GMR14). Panelists will draw on their research and experiences to discuss not only the challenges of how to prepare teachers in “low-income” countries, but also how to creatively and professionally engage teachers in resource constrained communities.
