This panel is a result of a partnership between AIR and NORRAG. AIR is mapping education programming in South Africa that addresses urban violence in the cities of Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. NORRAG, in collaboration with Igarape, its in-country Brazil partner, will map education programming in the three highest crime areas around Rio de Janeiro. The panel will be based on the mapping exercise conducted in each country between October 2014 and February 2015.
We will first discuss the process that led our research design. This process included developing an item list that was relevant to both the South African and Brazilian contexts, followed by developing terminology definitions to define conflict drivers and population groups that are beneficiaries of programming. We will explain why we did this in order to ensure that we can pull out patterns in the data.
After discussing the research design we will address the process of collecting and synthesizing the data. This involved creating program profiles, desk research using NGO / CSO online directories, looking into government policies, contacting individuals and organisations working in the field of violence, and meetings with key people and organisations.
