Unique Perspectives on Learning in Contexts of Conflict : Voices of Marginalized Groups in Northern Nigeria

Tue, March 10, 4:45 to 6:15pm, Washington Hilton, Floor: Concourse Level, Cabinet

Abstract

The presentation will start with the voices of orphans and vulnerable children laying out the challenges and opportunities for learning under the pressures of the conflict-affected setting of Northern Nigeria. These voices will be heard through a short three to five minute video where the learners themselves will discuss opportunities and challenges they face. Based on over ten years of educational programming in the region, there will be a set of lessons distilled that illustrate innovative strategies for attracting, retaining and sustaining most vulnerable learners in formal and non-formal schools. When resources are limited, the pressure to engage learners to achieve results and arguments for sustaining these programs come under pressure. We will hear from the manager and OVCs themselves on what works best and why.
