Journal on education in emergencies: Launching the inaugural edition

Description of Session

The Journal on Education in Emergencies, which seeks to publish groundbreaking and outstanding scholarly and practitioner work on education in emergencies (EiE), is celebrating the release of its inaugural edition at the CIES 2015 Annual Conference in Washington DC. The Journal on Education in Emergencies is a new scholarly, peer-reviewed journal established in response to the growing need for more rigorous research in the field of education in emergencies, defined broadly as “quality learning opportunities for all ages in situations of crisis, including early childhood development, primary, secondary, non-formal, technical, vocation, higher and adult education” (INEE 2010). The strengthened evidence base that will result from the contributions to the journal will support EiE research, policy and practice, and improve learning in and across service-delivery organizations, policy and academic institutions.

This flagship initiative by the Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE) is an important contribution in that it is the first academic journal dedicated to the field of education in emergencies. It also creates a space not only for the publication of scholarly articles, but also “field notes”, which give practitioners an opportunity to share their experiences, reflections and analysis of the work happening on the ground. The combination of scholarly and practice-oriented articles fosters a strong theory-practice connection, which will help guide the work conducted by both academics and practitioners.

The panel will consist of 3-4 presentations by authors from the journal’s first edition to present their scholarly research articles and/or field notes. A discussant will respond to the papers, both highlighting key findings and posing guiding questions to both the speakers and the audience. Speakers will engage with the audience during Q&A.
