Case Study Three: Indonesia (Led by Florida State University):

Tue, March 7, 4:30 to 6:00pm, Sheraton Atlanta, Floor: 1, Georgia 4 (South Tower)

Proposal

The facilitator will describe Florida State University’s work under the PRIORITAS program with Semarang State University (UNNES) in Semarang, Indonesia, to develop a comprehensive semester-long course on the teaching of early grade reading in Bahasa Indonesia. The course was designed for pre-service teachers studying in Teaching Training Institutes such as the one at UNNES. A total of 14 lectures (including background research for lecturers, as well as semi-scripted lessons, including powerpoint slides, video links and activities for use in the TTI classrooms), were jointly developed by FSU faculty and consultants and UNNES faculty from the Department of Elementary Education and the Bahasa Indonesia language program at the TTI. The lectures were piloted last spring and are currently being evaluated through classroom observations in the TTI and interviews with TTI instructors and student-teachers over the course of the current semester. In this session, FSU will present information about jointly developing the course, and will share the results from the course evaluation to date. The FSU facilitator will then work with the participants in his/her small group to discuss in detail plans and potential best practices or improvements that could prove beneficial in the effort to scale-up the course to other Indonesian TTIs.
