Piloting the SLE qualitative toolkit in Honduras

Mon, March 26, 11:30am to 1:00pm, Fiesta Inn Centro Histórico, Floor: Lobby Floor, Room A

Proposal

Objective:
- To understand how the SLE toolkit was used in the context of the Honduras.
- To understand the risks to safer learning environments in Honduras and what is causing those risks.
- To learn how the results of the SLE toolkit can be used to influence programming.

Education in Honduras has been disturbed by a variety of risks, most notably, gang violence. These risks have affected students and teachers by restricting access to school, generating a culture of fear, reducing performance, and increasing absenteeism and dropouts. In an effort to better understand the environment to appropriately design education programs, ChildFund piloted the Safe Learning Environment (SLE) Qualitative Assessment Toolkit in two primary schools in Choloma, an urban area, and two primary schools in Llama, a rural area. This presentation will present the unique context where the SLE toolkit was piloted, how the toolkit was adapted in these two different contexts, and explore the risks to education that were identified during the investigation: gang violence, school-related gender based violence (SRGBV), armed conflict, violence on the way to/home from school, and trauma in Choloma; and SRGBV, health epidemics, including malnutrition, trauma related to conflict and SRGBV in Llama. This presentation will also cover the challenges of translating the toolkit, methods to encourage children to talk about sensitive issues, and specific considerations regarding collecting data on risks to education, specifically when children are participants. Lastly, the presentation will shed light on how the data collected using the SLE Qualitative Assessment Toolkit is being used to influence program design.
