Providing educational access, quality of learning, and socio-emotional well-being for overage learners: Research results from Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya

Proposal

While the scholarly base for the field of education in emergencies is expanding quickly, the evidence base for the quality and effectiveness of accelerated education is markedly thin (AEWG, 2017b). Although there are a number of evaluations conducted by organizations on the effectiveness of accelerated education programs, there is a dearth of empirically rigorous literature that discuss the lasting impact of accelerated education programs on crisis-affected children (Burde, 2015). Therefore, this paper examines the accelerated education program in Kakuma refugee camp, Kenya, and explores the extent to which the program meets the educational access, quality of learning, and socio-emotional well-being of overage refugee learners. This case study highlights some of the research themes in the AEWG learning agenda, including equity, modalities, and effectiveness (AEWG, 2017b). In particular, the study explores the role of teachers in elevating learners' academic and socio-emotional well-being by asking, "what teacher characteristics, training, supervision and support are related to time on task, learning outcomes, and how does AEP influence socioemotional well-being of learners?" (Questions 10 and 12 in the learning agenda). To fully understand the program's impact on learners and teachers, this study provides an opportunity for overage learners and teachers (mostly "refugee teachers") to share their perceived academic, socio-emotional and professional needs in camp schools. Drawing from student surveys, stakeholder interviews and classroom observations, this paper will present the analysis of the data collected to date, and share emerging findings. The findings of this research will generate evidence to inform the program design and implementation, as well as monitoring and evaluation, in the field of accelerated education.
