Speed School as a model for accelerated education: Emerging evidence

Tue, March 27, 3:00 to 4:30pm, Hilton Reforma, Floor: 2nd Floor, Don Diego 1 Section C

Proposal

Speed School is an accelerated education program that Geneva Global (GCI) has been implementing for seven years across sub-Saharan Africa. GGI has successfully implemented the program in Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso in the past and is currently operating in Ethiopia, Uganda and Liberia. The presentation will address southern theories and methodologies and south-south collaboration, theories and practice. It will also examine the research and analysis conducted in regard to the model and how this can inform the broader discussion on global education and accelerated education in particular. The presentation will focus on various operational tenets of the Speed School model, emphasizing how these reflect best practices in the Southern context and current research in the field. A primary way in which the Speed School model exemplifies innovation and Southern driven ideas is the focus on student-centered and activity-based learning. Some of the activity based learning methods are Music Based Learning, Nature Based Learning, Community Based Learning and Family Based Learning. These activities lend themselves to fostering creativity in the classrooms where students and teachers are driving the creation of materials. In this way, classrooms are student-centered and remarkably relevant to the context. This model is based on research around effective teaching methodologies but contextualized to the Southern context and not driven by an outside curriculum model. Finally, the presentation will showcase the external and internal evaluations of the program and the students' transition into the formal school system. This will be based on research conducted by the University of Sussex, local evaluation firms and internal staff. The focus will be on how the research can be used to enhance the broader discussion on implementing accelerated education programs, looking at student and family demographics, learning outcomes, integration into the formal school system and parent attitudes.
