Research aims: In examining a comprehensive system of educational innovation, this study contributes to the evidence base for new models of quality, relevant, and accessible secondary education through an in-depth, mixed-methods case study of rural secondary education in developing countries, particularly by focusing on the following: 1)What system-wide features make a critical contribution to effective teaching in rural Honduran secondary schools? 2) Which elements of effective teaching contribute to sustained learning gains that are relevant and useful for youth as they transition to adulthood?
Methods: Extending a quasi-experimental impact evaluation that began in 2008, the study includes 1,426 youth that we began studying in their final year of primary school. Youth completed assessments in Spanish and Mathematics, as well as a detailed a survey including measures of self-esteem, civic engagement, and civic responsibility. The survey also included items regarding work, earnings, marital status, and childbearing. As a whole, these measures allow us to examine how education supports the successful transition to adulthood, with particular emphasis on adolescent girls’ empowerment. These quantitative measures are complimented by in-depth qualitative interviews and two weeks of observation of teacher professional development sessions. Overall, our research allows us to gain a deeper understanding of how to improve the secondary education system in rural settings.
