The cognitive foundations of reading and its application in mapping EGL curriculum

Proposal

Dr. Rebecca Stone will present on the cognitive foundations of reading which is based on the simple view of reading (SVR). The cognitive foundations of reading framework is part of the larger evidence framework for this study on teacher preservice education for literacy. The simple view of reading posits that reading comprehension equals decoding multiplied by language comprehension (Hoover & Gough, 1990). Both factors are necessary, and neither is sufficient. Dr. Stone will also share how this framework is being used as part of a first-grade literacy curriculum mapping in Nicaragua. The framework is being applied to a new literacy curriculum to help determine if the curriculum covers the cognitive foundations of reading or is based on some other unknown framework. Results of this mapping will be shared as well as how it forms the basis of the pre-service teacher education framework.
