Proposal

Dr. Josefina Vijil will present on the evidence framework that the team developed based on a thorough review of the international and CA literature on what teachers need to know and be able to do to effectively teach children to read. After conducting the initial literature review, we grouped evidence under broader themes as well as indicating if the focus was a teacher’s content or pedagogical knowledge. After multiple rounds of review, we categorized all of the evidence into three broad categories: (1) Understanding of child development, (2) knowledge of early grade literacy content (based on the cognitive foundations of reading framework discussed in the previous paper), and (3) Evaluation of literacy skills. Key evidence was organized in a table under these three categories including key content, quotations and corresponding references. This table of evidence then became the basis of the curriculum mapping and interview instruments that were developed. In addition, Dr. Vijil will provide an overview of what teacher training for reading looks like in the region and particularly in the five countries of interest in this study.
