Over the last ten years, ministries of education and donor agencies have turned their attention to improving early-grade reading. This introductory presentation summarizes the perspectives offered in this panel session. It also focuses on the diverse contributions to a UNESCO IBE publication on the same topic, by looking at the strengths and weaknesses of these efforts. The presentation will describe the insights the book provides about how to improve the many components of the national education systems that support early-grade reading instruction. The specific components include language, curriculum, instruction, teacher training, and assessment.
