Proposal

In 2018, Room to Read joined the partnership with Plan International and Aflatoun and is currently implementing Financial Education Life Skills (FELS) programmes in Tanzania and Sri Lanka. The programme aims to help girls develop critical life skill competencies, including increased financial literacy skills and knowledge.

The curriculum is delivered through extracurricular life skills clubs and includes an emphasis on concepts such as: saving and spending, planning and budgeting, and financial enterprise development—all of which contribute to girls’ economic empowerment.

The first panellist will provide a brief overview of the FELS program design and implementation which started in 2018 in Sri Lanka and Tanzania. Subsequently, she will provide preliminary results of the program intervention including cross-national comparisons across both countries and intra-country comparisons across schools and school levels. These results are based primarily on a pre-post assessment of knowledge and attitudes related to personal finance, entrepreneurship, and gender. This assessment was developed through adaptation of existing measures as well as development of new measures and contextualized through in-country pilot testing in both countries.
