The Talent Cultivation Mode of Japanese Independent Graduate Institute

Proposal

As higher education gets more popular and schools of higher education get more diversified, the trend to classify schools of higher education has become more and more apparent. To improve the higher education management system of our country, it is important to learn from other countries’ experiences of classified management of higher educational schools.This paper explores a special type of Japanese school of higher education which is rather new: Japanese graduate institute.Graduate institute is a type of independent higher educational school that only concerns postgraduate education, and Japanese graduate institute could reflect a new developing trend of Japanese higher education despite its small amount or size.In the main part of the paper, firstly the historical background as well as the developing process of Japanese graduate institute will be combed, and then the current situation of Japanese graduate institute will be generalized; after that, a case analysis of Nara Institute of Science and Technology, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, and Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology will be presented from the aspect of their school management theory, admission policy, organization structure, curriculum provision, industry-university-research cooperation system as well as international cooperation system.
Moreover, according to this study, Japanese graduate institute has the characteristics of independent and autonomous school character, highly specialized research field, internationalized talent cultivation, innovative industry-university-research cooperation system and so on.
