The Exploration of Universities’ Independent Recruitment System in China

Mon, April 15, 8:00 to 9:30am, Hyatt Regency, Floor: Bay (Level 1), Bayview B

Proposal

China’s College Entrance Examination, once the exclusive method of entering Chinese universities, has stirred national controversy. In order to break this single examination system and promote the diversification of admission standards, the independent recruitment system emerged in China around 2003. The system is considered to be a strong supplement to the college entrance examination, as well as a decentralization of government’s authority on universities’ admission. Nevertheless, the system is still largely dependent on student's College Entrance Examination scores. Additionally, China universities are also subject to various restrictions from the Ministry of Education, let alone obtaining full rights of exerting independent recruitment. By examining the major characteristics of the independent enrollment group and the college academic performance after admission, this study aims to identify to what extent the independent recruitment system affects universities’ admission results.
