Sourcing Innovative Solutions that Drive the Creation and Usage of Early Grade Reading Materials for All Children

Thu, April 18, 1:30 to 3:00pm, Hyatt Regency, Floor: Pacific Concourse (Level -1), Pacific H

Proposal

All Children Reading: A Grand Challenge for Development (ACR GCD) is a partnership of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), World Vision, and the Australian Government. Since its launch in 2011, ACR GCD has used its innovate competition model to source both the creation of early grade reading materials and the development of digital tools and platforms to facilitate the creation, distribution, and usage of content. As a result, ACR GCD has funded the enhancement of a user centered book writing tool, distributed over one million mother tongue instruction and reading materials in over fifty languages, including materials accessible for children with print disabilities and materials in local sign languages, and provided children access to content where traditional access to materials through publishers may not be possible.

In this presentation, ACR GCD will profile specific examples and research findings from these projects that demonstrate the benefits of technology-based literacy solutions, such as digital libraries, to effectively disseminate new or existing learning materials to underserved populations in their local languages. Creative approaches to sourcing content and ongoing partnership efforts to continue growing the pool of accessible early grade reading materials in under severed languages will be highlighted as a model for how we can collaboratively create a world where all children have materials in languages and formats from which they can learn to read.
