Empowering Educators to Use, Adapt and Create Local Language Reading Materials for Children

Thu, April 18, 1:30 to 3:00pm, Hyatt Regency, Floor: Pacific Concourse (Level -1), Pacific H

Proposal

In 2015, the United Nations set an ambitious goal that by 2030 all children should enjoy quality primary and secondary education leading to effective learning. To achieve this, reading materials must be available to support literacy development. This presentation will focus on how Pratham Books’ OER platform StoryWeaver is empowering educators across the globe to use, adapt and create local language books for their classroom needs. With over 9000 leveled storybooks in 120 languages that range from early readers, STEM storybooks, audio visual books, educators are using the content in digital and print formats to foster reading skills among children in low resource environments. As one of the largest publishers of open source supplementary reading materials for children, we will share how content can be produced, customised and disseminated at low cost by leveraging technology and collaborative frameworks.
