Cultivating academic talents and building the academic career reserve force are the main objectives of the colleges and university doctoral training system. However, the doctoral graduates leaving the academic research field is a problem that colleges and universities are very concerned about. In recent years, the implementation of the Application-Evaluation Mode is an important reform of the doctoral enrollment system in China. However, the current research has less analysis of the implementation effect of the “apply-review” policy. Therefore, it is of great significance for the Application-Evaluation Mode to be able to contribute to the admission of academic potential talents and to increase the proportion of doctoral graduates engaged in the academic career ratio. This study makes use of the data on the employment of doctoral students at a key university, adopts an empirical research strategy, and uses quantitative methods of DID to quantitatively analyze and find that the Application-Evaluation Mode has a negative impact on the academic career of doctoral graduates.
