Group Submission Type: Refereed Round-Table Session
This roundtable discussion seeks to raise questions around critical methodological issues for comparative & international education researchers. Given the 2019 CIES conference theme, our roundtable specifically seeks to engage with questions that link methodological issues to the concept of sustainability as it manifests in different ways in the inquiry process. This discussion also seeks to address what it means to create sustainable research practices in the comparative and international education context. In particular, we are interested in a conversation that addresses several interrelated questions, presented in turn below.
Key question 1: How do post-positivist epistemologies shape what is considered “legitimate” research and thus possibilities for alternative approaches? - Payal P. Shah, University of South Carolina
Key question 2: How is sustainability of research practices shaped (and constrained) by institutions/structures outside of the research context? - Karen Ross, University of Massachusetts Boston
Key question 3: What are our responsibilities as teachers of research methodology when addressing these issues with our students? - Supriya Baily, George Mason University
