Proposal

Workshop Purpose and Summary: The purpose of this workshop is for participants to gain practical skills in using the open source assessment and survey platform Tangerine. Tangerine is already used by 60+ organizations in 50+ countries and 100+ languages to conduct student assessments for early reading, numeracy, as well as surveys and interviews. Tangerine has brand-new features to assess executive function in young children, as well as to support continuous student assessment for teachers and their classrooms.

Learning Objectives: By the end of the workshop, participants will have learned how to: prepare an assessment or survey online, load it onto a mobile device and effectively use the assessment or survey for offline assessment or data collection. Participants will also learn how to quality assure their work and how to access and use their collected data.

Delivery Plan: The workshop will include a combination of short, focused presentations on key steps in the process, followed by hands-on practice by participants. The workshop will also allow for sharing and reflecting on participant and facilitator experience in using digital data collection tools and tips and tricks for success. Participants are encouraged to bring paper version of instruments they may already have and would like to turn into a digital tool to facilitate, improve, and accelerate data collection, cleaning, and analysis.

Note: Tangerine is open source, under a GNU GPL3 licenses. Interested parties can download and install Tangerine on their own servers (http://www.tangerinecentral.org/contact/). For graduate students or organizations without existing expertise or interest in server administration and management, a free version of Tangerine is available for data collections under 2,000 observations/year; a range of low-cost hosting and support options are available for organization with more extensive needs (http://www.tangerinecentral.org/pricing).
This workshop will not be a sales even; but a skills building event for a wide range of graduate students, educators, and organizations interested in an easy to use, open source solution to support student assessment and surveys, especially in low-resource environments.
