Racial capitalism and reparative justice in education

Tue, February 21, 2:45 to 4:15pm EST (2:45 to 4:15pm EST), Grand Hyatt Washington, Floor: Constitution Level (3B), Constitution A

Proposal

The panel opens with an introductory presentation by Arathi Sriprakash, co-Editor of the Special Issue on Black Lives Matter and Global Struggles for Racial Justice. The presentation briefly outlines concepts and political histories of racial capitalism, reflecting specifically on their implications for understanding the constitutive injustices of educational systems and structures. What might horizons of justice look like for education? The presentation then surveys key ideas and conditions of reparative futures of education. The idea of reparative futures understand that the harms caused by past and present anti-Black racism and state violence will be reproduced in the future unless and until there is active and systemic redress (Sriprakash et al. 2020; Táíwò 2022). The demands for reparation represent new possibilities for reconstructive repair, offering guideposts for antiracist movements globally, not least for the field of education. Here, we see a clear-sighted framework within the movement for Black Lives, as following papers elaborate, for CIE scholars and practitioners to attend more fully to the structural forms of injustice in education.
