Reflections on the impact of accelerated basic education on marginalized girls’ learning and transitions

Sun, February 19, 4:45 to 6:15pm EST (4:45 to 6:15pm EST), Grand Hyatt Washington, Floor: Independence Level (5B), Farragut Square

Proposal

The panelist will discuss findings from a three-year longitudinal study tracking 13,276 severely marginalized girls enrolled in accelerated basic education in South Somalia. The panelist will reflect on how patterns in the acquisition of literacy and numeracy skills vary among girls with disabilities, those facing mental health issues, second language speakers, and minority girls. The discussion will also include an analysis of findings related to the impact of the development of social-emotional skills, remote learning, and improved school management practices on students’ learning outcomes, reflecting on the lessons learned and how those could inform the expansion of ABE coverage in Somalia and other conflict-affected settings.
