Expanding Reach and Effectiveness of Accelerated Learning in East Africa: A Comparative Review of Speed School in Ethiopia and Uganda

Several factors continue to contribute to the disruption of education, or to access to education, for millions of children. According to the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, “[a]round the world, 222 million children are having their education cruelly interrupted”. To address part of these effects, Geneva Global INC and its affiliates, Geneva Global Ethiopia and Geneva Global Uganda are expanding their educational programs in Ethiopia and Uganda geographically, thematically, and strategically through the holistic approach of Speed School. This panel discussion will present the work of Geneva Global Ethiopia and Geneva Global Uganda in expanding the reach of educational program through Speed School.
The Speed School accelerated learning program is a proven model for bringing children who have never attended school or who dropped out of school back into the formal education system. Speed School works in support of the national Ministry of Education and through local civil society organizations to provide the first three years of the national curriculum in just 10 months to out-of-school children ages 9 to 14. The learning and skills fostered through Speed School prepares children to join government schools at the 4th-grade level.
The panel discussion will be an opportunity to compare strategies utilized by GG-Eth and GG-Ug in expanding the reach of Speed School in the two countries. More specifically, GG-Eth and GG-Ug as well as Geneva Global (headquarter in the US) will reveal specific strategies used for different regions --Somali, vs Oromia, vs AFAR etc in Ethiopia, and the expansion to new districts such as Near Eastern and Far Eastern Districts in Uganda-- to attend to local/regional characteristics. Thematically, the presenters will share the work done with the colleges of teacher education in the two countries where Geneva Global is supporting the adoption of the Speed School methods in the teacher preparation programs of the two countries. The three institutions will share lessons learned, strategies used, and challenges faced in the process as well as the way forward for the use of the Speed School methods for accelerated learning and beyond. Strategically, Geneva Global, Geneva Global Ethiopia and Geneva Global Uganda will present the work done on Government adoption of the programs, the outstanding successes, the challenges and the roadmap for a successful adoption.
