The Gender and Education Standing Committee Gender Symposium: Intersectional Policymaking in Comparative and International Education Part 1

Description of Session

Building on last year’s theme of intersectionality in practice, we will turn our attention this year to intersectionality in policy, given our location in DC. We aim to raise questions and ideas around the ways in which people and institutions involved in initiating, designing, implementing and evaluating policy include consideration of intersectionality. Participants will deliberate the theme considering questions such as: When considering gender-related education policy, are multiple subgroup characteristics considered? When individuals or organizations identify educational problems to be resolved, how does intersectional thinking come into play in framing those problems or their solutions?

The Symposium will take place in two parts, with the first part including a discussion-style panel (2:45-4:15pm EST) featuring an excellent lineup of six speakers, followed by Q & A. Between the two sessions we will host a coffee break for socializing and networking (4:15-4:45pm EST). The second part will consist of roundtables (4:45-6:15pm EST) in which participants will do applied work facilitated by the panelists. Participants are encouraged to come with questions related to their own current or future projects! You are welcome to come for all or part of the afternoon.
