The public purpose and social service of higher education are the important characteristics of Chinese universities. Over the past few decades, community engagement has grown on campus, and its related research has been enriched in the academic field. The more similar concept of community participation in Chinese education is social practice, which is similar to social entrepreneurship, service learning, community-based research and other concepts, but there is very big difference. Overall, they all emphasize that learning is linked to community goals. Despite the commonality of these fields, there is little interaction between them. In Chinese higher education discourse, the differences between the two are greater than the convergence. In the future, how to bridge the gap between the two and overcome their respective challenges will be the key to the sustainable development.
