In this discussion, the researcher will share lived experiences on access to research grants for southern-based researchers, working with partners, and collaborators from both the south and the north. In particular the discussion will make deep dives on funding mechanisms that promote more research productivity, research led by African researchers, and creating meaningful and long-term collaborations with Africa-based HEI and/or research institutions. In addition to practical experiences in accessing research funds, the discussion will also be premised on evidence which shows majority of global education research outputs are neither carried out in Africa nor undertaken by Africans, though the overall research output from Africa is at a mere 3% [7]. Furthermore, funding for education research in Africa seems to be concentrated in a few countries, with the top 10 countries accounting for nearly 92% of education research output in Africa [7] – this implies huge funding inequalities. The discussion will end by drawing implications of a shift in funding education research in Africa on productivity and collaborations, and make suggestions on what can be done differently in the context of the CIES conference theme.
