In this session, the panelist will discuss how State Ministries of Education’ Gender Focal Points in Somalia are facilitating the establishment of Girls’ Empowerment Forums, including the training of peer mentors; setting up linkages with district-level authorities; and providing ongoing support to youth-led actions. The session will discuss how this approach is contributing to reducing resistance to girls’ activism at community and school levels, while also shifting perceptions about student capabilities by system-level actors. The session will discuss how youth activism may be leveraged by fragile education systems to boost the accountability and quality of services, while also bringing perspectives from girls and system actors on potential risks.
