Overview of the Malawi Teacher Education system, current reform efforts, and the progress to date of the STEP Activity

Wed, March 13, 8:00 to 9:30am, Hyatt Regency Miami, Floor: Third Level, Boardroom

Proposal

The Strengthening Teacher Education and Practice (STEP) activity, funded by USAID, is a 5-year investment in the MoE with two overarching objectives: (1) to strengthen primary teacher education preparation programs at TTCs (i.e., pre-service); and (2) to support the operationalization of the national continuing professional development (CPD) framework for primary school teachers. The STEP Activity is working with the MoE to strengthen teacher training colleges, improve lecturer and teachers’ skills in early grade instruction and support the development of pathways for continuing professional development of Malawi’s primary school teachers. The STEP activity is committed to building the capacity of the Ministry of Education and teacher training colleges in preparing and developing educators for more effective classroom practice.

This presentation will provide an overview of Malawi’s teacher education system, their Initial Primary Teacher Education (IPTE) certificate program, and current reform efforts. The presentation will also outline the role of the STEP Activity and progress to date in supporting these reforms, including its role in providing technical assistance and establishing mechanisms that help the MoE foster coordination and collaboration among its partners.
