Developing the curriculum of Malawi’s first TTC primary education diploma

Wed, March 13, 8:00 to 9:30am, Hyatt Regency Miami, Floor: Third Level, Boardroom

Proposal

The STEP Activity is working with the Malawi MoE to improve the quality of teacher education taking place in all public and private TTCs in Malawi. One of the MoE’s current priorities is to develop and implement their first primary education diploma program for TTC student teachers. A thorough analysis of the two-year Initial Primary Teacher Education (IPTE) certificate was conducted by the STEP Activity to inform the technical support and the proposed road map to develop and implement this reform.
This presentation will address the findings of the STEP Activity IPTE certificate curriculum analysis and communicate recommendations for developing a high-quality primary education diploma program. The road map for establishing a diploma program and details on the progress to date, challenges in the process, and how challenges have been overcome will also be provided. This presentation will inform current and future CIES members undertaking similar work of potential pitfalls and best practices for transitioning a national pre-service teacher education program from a certificate to a diploma program.
