The session is to memorialize the work and life of Max Eckstein will feature reflections of five past presidents of CIES who will bear witness to Prof. Eckstein’s most professionally active years: Robert Arnove, Erwin Epstein, Mark Ginsburg, David Post, and Gita Steiner-Khamsi. Prof. Eckstein was himself a CIES past-president and helped to shape the Society’s contours during its early years. After a brief introduction, the session will describe Prof. Eckstein’s life and career, his close collaboration with Harold Noah (another CIES past president}, especially their authorship of the great classic book, Toward a Science of Comparative Education, and their research on secondary-school examinations. Participants’ reflections will include some of Prof. Eckstein’s outstanding scholarly accomplishments, his mentorship, his warmth, and his contributions to the Society’s development. Sufficient time will be made available for members of the audience to express their thoughts regarding Prof. Eckstein’s life and achievements.
