Group Submission Type: Formal Panel Session

Proposal

Rationale

I reviewed this book for Routledge and was impressed by both its theoretical creativity and methodological innovativeness. I invited Amy Jo Dowd to serve in this panel because of her long-term engagement with Save the Children. She brings a unique policy perspective to the focus of this book. I invited Olga Chykina because of her methodological expertise, including but not limited to the use of computational methods. My scholarship in international and comparative education includes several publications on the worldwide transformation of the status of women in education and other institutional domains.

The book takes a deep dive into parenting, the role of professionals in promoting cognitive development in early childhood, and the influence of professional expertise on motherhood and “quality” parenting. The book is grounded in a social constructivist perspective that also guides prior publications of Professor Schaub in Sociology of Education, Comparative Education Review, American Journal of Education, among others.

None of the critics have any prior publications with the author.

I submit that this will be a very interesting and thought-provoking session.
