“50 years after the Chilean coup: Stories and memories from the educational system” gathers reflections from academics, teachers, students, and other members of the educational system to discuss one of the key historical periods in the configuration of the current Chilean educational system. This book contributes to national and international conversations about the impact of Pinochet’s coup and the following 17-years-long dictatorship in the trajectories of past, present and future educational actors. The work integrates historical perspectives towards various educational issues and policy over the last 50 years, including memories and testimonies from teachers, students and members of grassroot and civil society organizations who lived or worked in schools and other educational contexts before, during and after the dictatorship.
The book is divided into two parts. The first part, “Historical analysis of the 50 years in education”, includes chapters that characterize and analyze changes that took place in different contexts and spheres of the educational system. It discusses issues such as teaching and teacher work, segregation and inequality, assessment policies, early childhood education, vocational high school education, among others, addressing the impact that the dictatorship had for the development of these contexts and subsequent consequences for the current educational system or Chilean society. The second part of the book, “PART II: Memories from the dictatorship in the world of education” focuses on the testimonies and memories from educational actors and institutions (such as CIDE) who lived the dictatorship from the different spheres of the educational field. The purpose of this section is to thematize and analyze personal and collective memories about the coup and the dictatorship in general, projecting their consequences into present day. What type of transformations took place during the civil-military dictatorship (1973-1990)? How did these changes impact the educational system, its members, and the Chilean society overall?
