Faculty of color have faced significant discrimination and
exclusion during the tenure and promotion process for the past several
years. According to the US Department of Education, in fall 2020, nearly
three-quarters of full time faculty were White, 39 % were White males and 35
% were White females. Asian/Pacific Islander faculty was the next largest
racial/ethnic group with 7 % Asian/Pacific Islander males and 5 percent
females. 4% percent of full-time faculty were Black females, and
3 % were Black males, Hispanic males, and Hispanic females. American
Indian/Alaska Native individuals and individuals of two or more races each
made up 1 % or less of full-time faculty. A review of current literature
along with various factors that has been contributing to the ongoing
discrimination of faculty of color will be highlighted.
Attendees will have the opportunity to learn various strategies to smoothly
navigate tenure / promotion and discuss their questions and concerns.
