Proposal

Government statistics cite Pakistan’s literacy rate as 62%, with significant gaps between urban (70% for males) and rural areas, and between genders (53% for females). A sizable percentage of primary school children cannot read a simple text in their native language.
Reading has profound effects on children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development. For children in Pakistan, where many face socioeconomic challenges, reading offers a vital escape and a means to develop crucial life skills. Books provide a safe haven, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. They allow children to explore different cultures, aspirations, and perspectives, cultivating empathy and understanding.
In 1978, our local organization sparked a movement, transforming the landscape of Pakistan by introducing children’s libraries to the country. Since then, our local organization established over 7,000 libraries, benefiting more than a million children and training over 1,000 teachers. The organization’s efforts have been recognized both nationally and internationally, highlighting its innovative approach to promoting literacy.
The flagship mobile library project, starting with the iconic storyteller bus, has expanded to include various mobile units like camel caravans, rickshaws, and book bikes. These mobile libraries bring books to children in urban slums and rural areas, where traditional libraries are non-existent.
Our local organization conducts extensive training for librarians, teachers, and creative practitioners, equipping them with skills to foster a love for reading among children. These programs emphasize the use of books to develop critical thinking and creativity.
Our local organization has published over 40 award-winning children’s books and developed educational materials tailored to the local context. These resources are designed to be engaging and culturally relevant, making reading an enjoyable experience for children.
The society runs reading advocacy campaigns, involving celebrities and community leaders to promote the importance of reading. These campaigns have successfully raised awareness and inspired communities to support literacy initiatives.
