Dr. Yonty Friesem, an associate professor of communication at Columbia College Chicago and the Executive Director of the Media Education Lab, will delve into the complex intersection of media ethics and the emerging landscape of generative artificial intelligence (AI). Friesem's presentation will offer insights into their pedagogical approach, focusing on cultivating media literacy skills among a cohort of educators who took the MedaEd Institue. The Institute (formally known as the summer Institute in Digitla Literacy) is a 6 week professional development for teachers, professors, administrators, and librarians to become leaders in their educational settings.
By examining the ethical implications of AI in education, Friesem's work aims to equip educators with the critical thinking tools necessary to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by this rapidly evolving technology. The presentation will explore key questions such as:
How can AI be harnessed responsibly to enhance classroom practices while safeguarding ethical principles?
What are the potential risks and biases associated with AI-generated content, and how can these be mitigated?
What are the ethical considerations for using AI in professional development and teacher education?
How can media literacy education empower educators to critically evaluate and utilize AI-driven tools effectively?
Through the case study of the MediaEd Institute and real-world examples of classroom integration of AI, Friesem will illustrate how the cohort of participants is engaging their students with these complex issues. The presentation will highlight the importance of developing a nuanced understanding of AI's capabilities and limitations, as well as the ethical frameworks that guide its use in teacher education and professional development. By fostering a culture of critical inquiry and ethical responsibility, Friesem's work seeks to contribute to the development of a more informed and accountable classroom practice.
