Leveraging Generative AI to Assess Media Literacy and Address Bias Among Diverse Student Populations

Wed, March 26, 1:15 to 2:30pm, Palmer House, Floor: 3rd Floor, Salon 3

Proposal

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI, has profound implications for education and society. As educators, it is imperative to equip students with the necessary tools to critically evaluate and engage with AI-generated content. This presentation will delve into a pilot study conducted at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), a federally designated Minority Serving Institution (MSI), Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI).
The study aimed to assess the media literacy skills and attitudes of undergraduate STEM students towards generative AI. By integrating AI-based assignments into their coursework, Dr. Kozlowska-Barrios and Dr. Yonty Friesem sought to understand students' ability to identify biases, evaluate the quality of AI-generated content, and navigate the complexities of intellectual property rights in the digital age.
The diverse student population at UIC, many of whom come from immigrant backgrounds, brought unique perspectives to the study. Their experiences and insights were invaluable in understanding the challenges and opportunities presented by AI. The findings of this research have informed the development of professional development modules for UIC faculty and an international online training program with the Media Education Lab.
This presentation will discuss the key findings of the study, including students' strengths and weaknesses in media literacy, their perceptions of AI, and their concerns regarding bias and intellectual property. Additionally, it will offer practical strategies for educators to foster critical thinking, media literacy, and responsible AI usage among diverse student populations. By equipping students with the skills to navigate the digital landscape, we can empower them to become informed and engaged citizens in a rapidly changing world.
