This study explores the hypothesis that education innovation, including EdTech, has not reached its impact potential in LAC due to insufficient funding for testing, iteration, and scaling of effective solutions. The research questions are anchored in the need to determine whether this lack of funding is indeed a primary barrier and to explore the role of the philanthropic sector in catalyzing education innovation across LAC.
The framework examines the philanthropic landscape within LAC, specifically the flow of capital to education organizations, including non-profits and EdTech startups. By assessing gaps and opportunities where catalytic or philanthropic capital could make a significant impact, it aims to provide actionable insights for stakeholders. The study draws on lessons from the US and Europe, where philanthropic investments have successfully catalyzed innovation in education, to propose strategies that could be applied to LAC.
The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews with key stakeholders and quantitative analysis of funding data. This dual approach ensures a comprehensive understanding of the current EdTech landscape, including challenges, opportunities, and gaps in support. The findings are expected to inform strategic decisions regarding resource allocation, enabling more effective interventions in areas such as access to technology, digital literacy, and educational equity.
The study will provide a detailed analysis of the philanthropic ecosystem in LAC, focusing on its role in advancing EdTech, and drawing parallels with the success of the FinTech sector in Africa.
By addressing the systemic barriers to effective EdTech implementation in LAC, the study will offer new insights into how philanthropy can drive transformative change in digital solutions for education. The results of the study, which will be completed by the end of 2024, will provide a roadmap for stakeholders seeking to enhance learning outcomes in the region through targeted, evidence-based interventions.
