In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, education systems across Latin America have faced unprecedented challenges, including severe learning gaps, heightened dropout rates, and the urgent need for remote learning solutions. One foundation has responded to these challenges by launching a pioneering EdTech program designed to connect public school districts with innovative education technology startups.
This approach to EdTech is rooted in the belief that technology, when thoughtfully integrated into the educational process, can play a transformative role in addressing educational inequalities. By focusing on scalable, evidence-based solutions, the foundation aims to empower educators, engage students, and ultimately improve learning outcomes across Latin America.
In partnership with key stakeholders, a pilot project in Minas Gerais, Brazil’s fourth-largest state, has been developed to reduce drop-out by leveraging the innovative capabilities of a Brazilian EdTech company specializing in behavioral economics and AI-driven solutions for the education sector.
A digital learning platform, Eduq+, targets students in early public high school. It uses AI-powered messages to send personalized text nudges to students or their caregivers twice a week, aiming to influence habits, increase educational engagement, improve grades, and reduce dropout and repetition rates.
External evaluations have shown significant positive impacts:
• 33% reduction in exam repetition rates.
• 50% decrease in school dropout rates.
• 15% increase in school participation and 25% increase in math proficiency.
• During COVID-19, it helped prevent learning losses and improved test scores.
Despite its success, challenges remain, such as addressing linguistic diversity, accessibility for non-literate users, and the costs of SMS messaging and device ownership. As this initiative continues to expand, it offers a promising model for educational innovation worldwide.
